For this assignment, you will be writing a literary analysis of Charlotte Perkins Gilmans The Yellow Wallpaper and Vladimir Nabokovs Signs and Symbols. Using the How to Write a Literary Analysis handout as a guide, examine Gilman and Nabokovs short stories using the literary tools of symbolism, setting/imagery, and tone. Your analysis should include the follow elements: An introduction that grabs reader attention, provides relevant information, and concludes with a well-crafted thesis statement. Summaries of both short stories. Analysis and comparison of the stories using the three literary tools. A conclusion that restates the thesis, sums up the analysis, and ends with a profound statement. A works cited page that includes, at least, Gilman and Nabokovs short stories: Gilman, Charlotte Perkins. “The Yellow Wall Paper.” American Fantastic Tales: Terror and the Uncanny from Poe to the Pulps, edited by Peter Straub, Library of America, 2009, pp. 131-47. Nabokov, Vladimir. “Symbols and Signs.” The New Yorker, 15 May 1948, https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/1948/05/15/symbols-and-signs. If you choose to cite additional sources, be sure that they are cited correctly in-text as well as on your works cited page. The analysis should be 3-5 pages in length.
