Isaiah, prophesying a time of world peace in the end times, implored the people to turn their weapons into tools for farming (Plowshares, 2012). Joel, who foresaw a time of grave war, called for the people to do the opposite (Plowshares, 2012). For business today, these passages imply the importance of innovation and flexibility, and call for an adaptation of what resources are present. These passages tie well with Ecclesiastes 3, which claims there is a time for everything. There is “a time to plant and a time to uproot (v. 2),” “a time to tear down and a time to build (v. 3),” “a time for war and a time for peace (v. 8).” There are times when a society needs swords to prosper, and there are times when a society needs plowshares to thrive. These passages suggest it is greater to fulfill the needs of society through innovation than to fulfill the original purpose of the technology.Using technological development to serve society drives “economic growth, industrial development, and the rise of living standards (Balland, Morrison, & Petralia, 2017).” The call to technological development in Isaiah and Joel displays resource conservation, which is certainly beneficial to society (Amato, 2013). Mike Amato looks at reasons for technological development from a socio-economic standpoint and lists them as: “minimum consumption of energy, cost-effectiveness, waste minimization, environmental sustainability, and fulfilling social responsibility (2013).” Accompanying this thought, the South African Qualification Authority articulates that social consciousness is a key trait in cross-field technology development, as an awareness of the needs of society is the only way one can know how to help (Govender, Lachman, & Pillay, 2018). Then, one can develop and innovate new technologies as solutions to society’s problems in an ethical and informed manner.ReferencesAmato, M. (2013, February 23).
