research paper
1. Essays must be double spaced, typed in readable-size font, and must be at least 600 words and no more than 800 words.
2. Titles are not required but are acceptable. The Essay Sample provides the information that should be included in the upper left corner. It also gives examples of how to write and how NOT to write.
3. Essays should display both knowledge and understanding of course content as well as an ability to evaluate, explain, analyze, and apply that knowledge and understanding.
4. Writing mechanics are as important as knowledge and understanding. THOROUGHLY READ AND STUDY THE ESSAY SAMPLE before writing and refer back to it while editing.
a. Use proper grammar and essay structure, and include a thesis that accurately identifies what the essay will address. Underline the thesis.
b. Writing style must be professional as opposed to email, text, or conversational style.
c. Original thought should be used in lieu of clichs. Writing should be tight and limit repetition and useless words.
d. Do NOT resort to the use of I, we, you, me, my, or similar terms that are not third person. Use third person references (they, the public, a named person, etc.) to express a position in the essay. Let the cited information and professional writing express and support the position. The perspective of the essay is that which is told by the content and NOT by inappropriate phrases such as “I really feel…”
Instructions:
Review the documents we covered in the writing workshop. They have been moved to this module for your convenience. Particularly review the Essay Guidelines, Essay Sample, and the Writing Tips.
The research paper guidelines are the same as the writing assignment guidelines, (see the document Essay Guidelines), except that you will do some outside research to choose your topic and you will cite to some outside sources.
You still need to cite to several class material sources that have been posted to canvas.
For citing, to make it easier for your partner to edit, please use the following format:
Class material: class material: (name of source)
Outside material: outside source: (name of source and link) (if it is on the web) or (name of author) (if it is not on the web)).
Bold your cites.
Examples include the following.
Class material example: The American Criminal Justice system is based on common law. Class material: History of the American Justice System.
Outside source web link example: The American Criminal Justice system is based on common law. Outside source: http://JusticeinAmerica.com
Outside source NOT on the web example (this one is a book): The American Criminal Justice System is based on common law. Outside source: The History of American Criminal Justice, Dr. Dale Smith.
