Nature as Site and Subject Matter in Contemporary Art

Your Land is My Land: Nature as Site and Subject Matter in Contemporary Art

Artists in the late 1960s abandoned the confined spaces of the studio, the gallery and the museum and engaged in working at remote locations to address changing perceptions of nature and culture. The first wave of land artists that included Robert Smithson, Walter de Maria and Michael Heizer has been followed by many others who prefer to work with natural locations, making site-specific works whether they are installations or performances. Based on materials we discussed in our class or on your own experiences with contemporary art, choose a few, but at least two artists, and provide a set of well-formulated questions and points about their practice of appropriation along with a solid, research-based analysis of their works.

The paper should be submitted using 12 point Times New Roman and double-space. Its length should be at least 6 and no more than 10 pages excluding bibliography and illustrations. Illustrations should contain black and white copies of the discussed works with full captions.

Spelling errors, typos and grammatical inaccuracies are unacceptable and will result in a lower grade regardless of the content of the paper.

Proper standards of citation are to be followed: sources of quotes and references should be provided in either footnotes or endnotes using the Chicago Manual Style (see below). Any form of plagiarism or undocumented use of research materials will result in a failing grade.
