How are notions of environmental justice (EJ) potentially relevant to land use decisions and remedy selection during the Superfund/Brownfield process? In addressing the above question, students are encouraged to consider a variety of approaches (i.e., the short-essay format does not support a comprehensive answer). However, it is suggested that essays address at least some aspects of the following: What are some of the commonly held concepts of EJ? How do the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) formally define and engage EJ? What ethical principles and/or virtues inform our concept of EJ (e.g., utilitarianism, justice/fairness, compassion, religious or cultural norms, professional codes, etc.)?
