Its an archival curation/ blog post assignment. Use archive(s) from UF Smathers Library and write about the history of environmental policy in the Florida Keys.
The best way to think about this assignment is that it is like a history paper but more informal, using multimedia sources (various primary sources including photos, video, etc) embedded into the blog to explain change over time. One strategy for tracking change over time is to pick three to four years and analyze what changed and why. Say, for example, you were assigned the Everglades. What was Everglade’s environmental/water policy in 1900, 1930, 1970, and 2000? Using this strategy should give a baseline to articulate a thesis, an explanation about how and why Everglades policy changed. To be clear, I am not suggesting that everyone structure their blog this way. Instead, this is just a suggestion for how to approach the assignment. Be creative and have fun with it.
Also very important! While this is a history-oriented assignment, do not hesitate to reflect on contemporary environmental issues such as climate change, sea-level rise, saltwater intrusion, and reduced spring/river flow (to name a few) when relevant. Utilize history to contextualize and deepen your understanding of these issues.
