German Comics and Graphic Novels

Students will produce a short comic book that examines some event(s) of historical important either in Germany, locally (Vancouver/BC), or as part of their own family history. Modeled after the kinds of graphic narratives we have been reading in class, the final project will be an 8-page comic book that utilizes at least one historical object or archival document. While students are welcome to find a topic that speaks to them, they are encouraged to produce a comic based on archival research performed on the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre website, the archive for which is available online here: https://www.vhec.org/collections/. Students will select two to three documents or artifacts (a picture, a letter, an object, etc.) from the internet, their personal collection, or an online archive to form the foundation of their graphic narratives or inform its narrative progression, though the role of these objects is at the discretion of the student.
