Gender/Women in the Classical World

A central theme of this course is the voicelessness of women in antiquity. Men were often the arbiters of what was read, written, and passed down to subsequent generations. This semester we will read a comedy and a tragedy. Each of these plays, in some way, focuses on female characters and societal perceptions of ancient women. Each of these plays was also written by a male poet, performed exclusively by men, and appreciated by a predominately (or exclusively) male audience. For this assignment, you will write an argument-driven
essay (1,000-1,500 words) for how we can or cannot (or a nuanced combination) use these sources in our investigation of ancient womens lives. You will need to cite specific examples from the plays throughout your essay. The essay must have a thesis statement, must be typed, and should be proofread before submission.
