Observation Exercise (50 points) Length 5-7 pages.This exercise is all about developing your observation and writing skills. Choose a setting that is interesting to you and that will yield an opportunity for you to take copious notes. You must observe for one hour and record what you see. This can occur in the form of notes, drawings, floor plans, photos, etc. Write up a summary using “thick description”. This assignment only requires one observation session, but if you would like to do multiple sessions, it may help you understand the dynamics of the location and the subjects you are observing. Remember the reader! What does it mean to show, rather than tell, what the participants are experiencing? Things to include in your final write up:The setting. Describe the entire physical space. Include a floor plan, photos, etc.The people. Look around you and describe the people in the setting. Focus on individuals or groups. What are they doing in this space?The action (and the meaning behind the action). What are the relationships between people and groups? What can you discover about why the people are doing what they are doing in this space?Describe the groups and any common characteristics. For example: age, gender, ethnicity, dress code, speech, activity, and so on.Focus on one or two people to describe in detail.
