A personal statement is an essay that explains your goals, your background and education and other facets of your life that you have arranged to help you succeed in the career you have chosen. Secondly, it should hint at the main topics to come in your statement. Finally, it needs a bit of “secret sauce,” namely a focus on what readers will learn once they find out more. This last element is important – it transforms what could be a list of individual attributes or experiences into an idea that will guide your text, a direction for your essay and possibly a lesson your audience should learn about you once they finish reading your text.
